Two summers ago I purchased these two books with the plan of reading them with my kids, and then taking them down to Philadelphia to see the sights firsthand. I wanted to take a tour of Independence Hall, show them the Liberty Bell, and teach them about the famous Colonial residents of this city- Betsy Ross and Ben Franklin. And you know what happened? I actually chickened out! I was afraid to drive the “Mommy bus” into a downtown area- and was worried about where I would park it. How would we find our way around? Where would we stay that would be kid-friendly? Is everything I want to see close together or too spread out? And would my kids be entertained?

I giggle now to think that I was afraid to take my kids out on a solo-parent road trip!

I actually forgot all about this “big idea” until I was unpacking boxes onto our bookshelves this past weekend and came across these two books. And now- I am completely inspired to plan a Philly Road Trip!

This year we are celebrating the 308th anniversary of Ben Franklin's birth, and to honor that, the Benjamin Franklin Museum in Philadelphia is offering free admission from Friday January 17th thru Sunday January 19th! Visitors can learn about the various roles Franklin filled during his lifetime, including his work as a printer, a scientist, a diplomat and a founder of civic institutions.

After visiting the Museum, you can take a walk over to the B. Free Franklin Post Office where you can get your postcards hand-stamped, just as would have been done during Ben Franklin's time. And I certainly plan to grab dinner at City Tavern where the ambiance and food match the time period when our forefathers created Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. I'll be the one ordering a Poor Richards Spruce, a beer that is still made from a recipe crafted by Ben Franklin himself!

Perhaps the next day, we'll hit up the Liberty Bell as well as Independence Hall before taking a break to swim in the hotel pool and relax together as a family. It sounds like the perfect family road trip, doesn't it? A little history, a dose of inspiration, and plenty of time enjoying fun and good food together!

Ben Franklin is still quite the celebrity in Philadelphia. Celebrate his 308th with free admission to the new Benjamin Franklin Museum on January 17, 18 and 19.  Learn more at VisitPhilly.com
